Microsoft Patents Pedestrian GPS System
With the grant of their US Patent #8090532, Microsoft is looking to further develop the concept of a route generation system for pedestrians. The new patents is described as a way for those individuals who travel on foot to help them navigate to their desired destinations by helping them avoid difficult environments, like accidentally venturing into bad neighborhoods or areas affected by harsh temperatures.
The patent aims to fill a void in a consumer market that hasn’t been address by anyone else. The majority of the route generation systems used are for those in automobiles. With this patent those who are not in vehicles will be able to navigate to their destinations by following a certain route, which can be developed for a person taking into account factors that only affect a pedestrian.
Such a device or application will likely be very helpful for travelers, tourist who visit large cities like Manhattan or Los Angles who often depend on complete strangers for guidance to get to their destination. But Microsoft also sees the new patent fullfilling the needs of people who live in economically depress areas that don't rely on vehicles and often travel by foot.
